Vista-enabled software for turning down volume?

Vista-enabled software for turning down volume?

2009-02-11 by lowdebt4me

We just received delivery of a Mark III disklavier (floppy disk only).
We turned the volume down as far as we could but it is still too loud
for us. From reading various posts, I understand the dkvutilities and
perhaps some other software, allows one to further reduce the volume of
midi pieces. Does anyone know if these will work under Vista? If not,
can someone recommend a program that will do the job which works under
Vista. I would not object to buying a commercial product for this
purpose, such as Cakewalk, if I could figure out which version of
Cakewalk to buy!

Thanks in advance...

Greetings lowdebt4me,

all of my utilities work under vista. i have also tested some of them
in Windows 7 Beta. i have a program called MidiMod2 that adjust
velocity in MIDI files on a batch or individual file basis. you can
find it on the following page of my web site as well as many other
programs. i have hundreds of others and can also make custom programs,
usually with little effort.

i don't have a vista machine any more. it became the Windows 7 Beta
machine. Vista absolutely sucks for the work i do and i was thrilled
to dump it. Windows 7 had been fixed for most of the things that made
Vista useless for my needs. so, i can no longer test programs in vista
without installing it on another computer and that would mean having a
worthless piece of junk taking up space. i think people will be
pleased when Windows 7 comes out. Microsoft really got scared and did
a little work on it.

Thanks, Spencer_Lists,

I will look into it. In my first attempt, I've downloaded the
classical music zip file from the user group. I see these are .fil
files, which I understand are Yamaha ESEQ files. I played a few and
they are quite loud, so I will try to reduce their volume. Will
minimod2 will work with .fil files?

I see the Dkvutilities contain a program named Veloset which will
reduce the volume of both ESEQ and MIDI files. I'll try this first
and see if it works. Otherwise, I assume I'll have to convert these
ESEQ files to MIDI files before minimod2 can work with them?

Greetings lowdebt4me,

midimod2 does not work with eseq files. you would have to convert. you
might need to have a pre vista machine to run dos. someone else can
probably advise on his.

Re: Vista-enabled software for turning down volume?

2009-02-13 by lowdebt4me

Thanks again, Spencer_rolls.

I downloaded the DKVutilities and was able to open Veloset in Vista,
which apparantly works with ESEQ files. I say apparantly because,
while the program did run, and I was able to adjust the left (volume?)
and right (velocity?) sliders, my modified .fil files still seemed
pretty loud.

After a number of attempts at gradually reducing the volume of the .fil
files I obtained from the classical zip file in the files section of
this user group, I finally set the volume and velocity levels to their
minimum values(ie, 1). I'll have to do an A/B comparison of an
original, unmodified .fil file to my minimum value version of the file
to see if I can tell a difference. I think there is a difference, it
just isn't as great a difference as I had hoped for.

I wonder if another program, such as minimmod2 or gnmidi, would allow
me to reduce their volumes even further, or are these minimum settings
the same minimums that would be established using other programs
(assuming I converted the .fil files to MIDI files).

Greetings lowdebt4me,

midimod2 will allow you to reduce the velocity of notes on to 1 which
is very soft. velocity 1 is the softest there is in MIDI. the DKV will
probably play all notes at a minimum level. i think this value is
adjustable but if you make it too low notes may fail to play.
