Upgrade Mark II XG

Upgrade Mark II XG

2009-03-11 by Freeman Richard

I'm the original owner of a Disklavier DSC2 Grand with Mark II XG
control unit. I would love to have features / capabilities now
available with the Mark IV series, such as access to content via the
internet, hard-drive storage, etc., however I'm not going to spend a
small fortune replacing my entire piano to do so. There must be
alternatives to upgrading.... I hope. It irritates me that Yamaha's
upgrades are seriously limited and don't allow migration to successor
series. Maybe they finally got it right with the Mark IV, but that
doesn't help me.

I'm new to this forum, so have several questions to ask. I greatly
appreciate any replies.

a) I would like to play Piano Soft + Audio, or Smart Piano Soft
media. Is adding the DCD1 module the only option?

b) If yes, I understand the DCD1 is no longer manufactured by Yamaha.
Will there be a successor unit?

c) Does anyone have experience in using a PC / or Mac connected to the
Disklavier in order to play MIDI files, or PianoSoft, PianoSoft Plus
titles? If yes, I'd greatly appreciate any tips. I have both Mac and
PC machines I could use.....

d) Lastly, has anyone used Garageband (Mac) to send data to the
Disklavier. I understand Garageband requires a plug-in in order to
enable Midi out. Again, if anyone has experience with setup, any tips
would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help. I hope to return the favor some day!

Regards,

Rich Freeman

Rich,

I have an older Mark II (MX100II) with a broken floppy drive, so I was trying to figure out how to upgrade it much like you. The official upgrades from Yamaha (DSR1 and DCD1) were discontinued by Yamaha and were way too expensive anyway. So then I discovered the Disklavier's MIDI ports, connected them to my Mac iBook laptop with the Yamaha USB MIDI interface, and purchased Metro SE from Sagan Technology (http://www.sagantech.biz/products), which I found to be a really nice and inexpensive MIDI sequencer for the Mac. This product enables me to play and record from the Disklavier really easily and intuitively, using my Mac's hard drive instead of the piano's floppy drive. I looked at GarageBand, but then decided on Metro SE when I saw what a great price it was and what great features it had. This doesn't answer all your questions but I hope it helps.

Bill

Bill,

Much thanks for your email. Your reply adds a few more pieces to my
jigsaw puzzle. I'll source a MIDI cable as well as look at Metro SE.

Re: [disklavier] Upgrade Mark II XG

2009-03-12 by Dokhanchi

I'm not familiar with the Mark II and if it can be connected to a laptop. But if you can, your solution is simple. I just bought a DGC1-B that has the Mark III version B with the record function late 2008. I did not want to pay the extra for mark IV. I then bought a used laptop from this guy for $300 (I have bought over 20 laptops from him for family and friends over the last 2 years and he has never disappointed)
and a midi to usb cable for $10 from ebay. I am connected to my wireless router and have a 60 GB hard drive connected to my Yamaha piano. I use Van Basco's software as a player and it is amazing. I'm not sure if there is anything a Mark IV can do that my set up can not? Is there? My setup is also easily upgradeable and cost thousands less.

Greetings Freeman,

If you just want to play MIDI files, you do not need a sequencer
although they are very helpful for editing. There are playlist players
for the Mac. I used two of them in the past and can unfortunately only
remember the one that I did not like the best. This was Qmidi. It was
another one that I really liked. Maybe someone else on the list can
suggest some others. There is also Sweet Midi for the Mac. The windows
version looks reasonable but more complicated than necessary. Trial
version was difficult to set up.

That's helpful, thank you. I do use MIDI files.

I'm curious if you (or anyone reading this forum) has experience
transferring Disklavier media (e.g. Pianosoft solo, Pianosoft plus,
etc.) to a hard drive. In order for this to play properly , I assume
you would need a XG software. If I can get this to work, I'm half-way
to achieving MarkIV capabilities....

Your PC/MAC will have problems reading PianoSoft disk. Have a look at http://www.carolrpt.com/softwaredwnld.htm for a variety of utilities you can use to convert e-seq files to SMF format for use on a computer. Anotgher option would be to play the files on the piano and record them onto a sequencer on your computer via MIDI, although this would be a bit long-winded as you'd have to do it in real time.

Another good software package for the Mac or Windows is Midiswing.

I just got Rondo yesterday. Except that the playlist(s) are encoded in
a non-readable format (and, therefore, not portable or manually
editable), it works well and as expected. I was spoiled by VanBasko on
Windows, but I'm happy to move to a Mac platform. -=mark=-

Greetings theta,

although i have a couple of Macs here (not the resident Mac person) i
don't seem to have Rondo installed on any of them. are the playlist
files text or binary? i am not interested in a difficult reverse
engineering job but if it is a matter of text reformatting i might try
to convert the files to something readable. do you have one you can
send (converted to pc format if it is text)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
