Mark4 click/buzz sound

Mark4 click/buzz sound

2009-03-15 by Phil Blah

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem with the C2 mark4.

There is a small clicking rattle sound that is NOT note specific nor changes in pitch when you play it OR it plays it self... Funny enough the 'rattle' can be almost completely gorn one day and back the next, so I suspect the room environment is effecting it.. its sound is in 2 main areas on the keyboard... the noise is less but still there in silent mode..

My piano tuner seems to just 'blame' both the piano because it has 'extra' stuff that can make noise (not that he is against modern pianos like the disklavier), he in-particular hates the design (under the keys) of this metal long plate that floats on little springs and has a little box with a plastic cover, (I think that's the fibre optic converter) that originally caused a buzzing that he fixed. He also seems to think that I am 'looking into it too much' but as I play by ear I am very sensitive to bad noises on pianos...

Anyway, most of you will just tell me to call Yamaha, but as I am in Australia they are hopless (yes very hopless) and would just make out that I have to pay big $$ for some special yamaha guy to come out... but I am interested to hear from a tech in the group or if anyone else has the same problem!

Cheers,

Philip

Greetings Phil,

first, is there any way you can change the page width in you e-mail
program? it is difficult to read your e-mails that are very wide.

it does sound like some random loose part that is rattling. it can be
very difficult to track down these sorts of things. i find it even
more difficult because i have some sort of hearing deficiency that
makes it impossible to tell the direction of high frequency sounds. i
forget what it is called but it is actually quite common.

you can use either a stethoscope or a tube stuck in your ear to find
the location of noises more easily. i have a little electronic
stethoscope with different probes that is quite useful. if you suspect
any disklavier parts as containing the rattling piece you can use your
hand to dampen the noise and narrow down the search.

since you mention that the problem is more severe in certain parts of
the keyboard, it might be that the keyframe is not sitting correctly
on the keybed. there are leveling screws that will click on the keybed
if the keyframe is not well bedded. you can take off the keyslip and
shim the space between the keyframe and keybed in various places to
see if the noise goes away. if it does then you just need to adjust
the leveling screws properly.

you can use my MIDI virtual keyboard program to make the DKV play a
note over and over while you search for the cause of the noise. you
would need to connect the DKV to a computer with a MIDI interface. you
can vary the playing loudness while playing which can make diagnosis
easier. i use the program for all sorts of testing especially for
finding action and other noises. it is easier to have just one note
playing repeatedly than to try to find the noise within complex music.

one other thing. it is entirely possible that the noise is outside of
the piano and is something else resonating. i have heard cases of
things like a picture on a wall or a vase on a table producing a noise
that seemed like it was coming from the piano. especially if your
ability to locate the direction of high frequency sounds, as is the
case for me, this is certainly possible.

Sounds like another good reason not to let anyone but a certified Disklavier tech touch your piano.

Or to know when to call the right person in for the right job. I'd still
rather have the tuner I've had for the last 20 years but call in a
disklavier tech when there is an issue on the non-conventional parts.

Re: [disklavier] Mark4 click/buzz sound

Hello there,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply.

Sorry about my email formatting, I am actually using Yahoo's webmail.. I'll make it plain text and see how it goes!

That's a good idea about the stethoscope, I might try that.

Ah yes, with the keyframe my Piano tuner actually spent a full day setting everything he also did a full regulation and tightened anything/everything he could. That's when he found this funny bar that is on springs that was causing another sound, which my tuner seemed to fix... it was also to the point he was worried about it making other noises.

With this, I would like to point out that if you did not actually hit the keys, but use the palm of your hand on the frame the little 'click' sound would appear! so it was NOT related to any keys or movement (all 88 keys were on the table lol).

I might just called Yamaha and see what they think.

Oh yes, with what you said with external noises, I did find a while ago a silly lamp near by was rattling, it was a specific note/chord that made it rattle, but I just recorded it and had it playing back so I ran around the room and found it.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Philip
