DKC 850 and Piano Volume?

DKC 850 and Piano Volume?

2010-03-24 by lowdebt4me

Does anyone know if the new control unit will allow for a quieter Disklavier playback than what came with my original Mark III?

Playback volume will not change.

Bill Brandon,

Yamaha has made a BIG mistake by not including a better volume control. This is like Toyota continuing to sell cars with accelerator problems. They could have hit it out of the park with a volume control that offered a lower volume and an option of linear or progressive volume reduction. This could all have been done with software.

Additional volume control only would have almost made the price worthwhile.

How does Yamaha get their feedback before designing an upgrade like this?

I was under the impression that the minimum volume is mostly controlled by the sensitivity of the solenoids that activate the keys. If that is the case...no software upgrade will be able to affect that...

If the solenoids cannot produce a lower minimum volume, that is
understandable. But the high end of the volume can still be lowered.
That is what I meant by progressive volume reduction. The max impact is
reduced to a tolerable level and the minimum impact may not be reduced
at all. The math to do such a modification is not rocket science. It
could be something like this. Max volume is reduced by 30% and minimum
volume is only reduced by 3%. It may flatten out the volume changes but
that would be acceptable to many of us.

Some pieces would have all notes reduced by an equal percentage because
the minimum volume is well above the minimum mechanical level. Other
pieces would need the progressive approach because the minimum impact is
too close to the mechanical minimum..

Re: [disklavier] DKC 850 and Piano Volume?

2010-03-25 by athomik

The ability to play back at low volume on a piano player system is limited in part by the mechanical nature of the instrument, where the solenoids have to overcome the inertia and keep control of the solenoids (i.e keys, whippen, hammers, etc.) The other factor is the sophistication of the electronics, i.e. how accurately the key and hammer movements are monitored and how accurately the solenoids are controlled. On the Disklavier, the key & hammer sensors, as well as the solenoids are (obviously) built into the piano, not the DKV controller. The processing of the sensor information, as well as the fine control of the solenoids is handled by the PK-control circuit board. This is also built into the piano, which means that factors such as the lowest ppp volume cannot be changed by anything in the DKV controller. Basically, the DKV unit is a user interface which sends MIDI information to the piano and MIDI information cannot alter the characteristics of the hardware it is sent to.

If you think of an analogy, no matter how many DVD players, speakers or other gadgets you put into your car, you're not going to make it any faster, but you might enjoy the gadets so much, you don't worry about how fast you go.

Re: [disklavier] DKC 850 and Piano Volume?

2010-03-25 by JORGE FERNANDEZ

Some years ago y solved the problem "too loud piano" installing some Sound Absorbing Foam"

Since mine is an Upright I've placed them in the outside back.

They worked fine. (Thanks to the email advice from Carol Beigel)

I`m exited by the DKC 850, maybe I order one soon.

(no price tag in my area ye).

Regards.
