I was able to copy the files on my MKIIXG off the memory onto a floppy then use utilities to copy them onto the USB drive and play them on the DKC-850. If you have lost your disklavier manual, I can send a short set of directions from mine.

there was one file that I was NOT able to copy off to floppies and that was the sample song that was shipped with the unit, so I'm guessing that was a "copywritten" piece of music that was protect. However all the songs that I had recorded to memory moved just fine, following the directions in the manual.

yes that would be great. Does this work for Disklaviers such as the Mark II? I
think that's what I have is Mark II or III.

Cakewalk

2011-05-13 by nehs75

I went to Cakewalk.com to check out their software as hinted here on how to edit downloaded midis. Since I'm just beginning at this, all I want is to look at how piano parts are set to channel 1, and ensure that file is set as SMF Type 0. If there's an easier, freeware to use, please feel free to suggest.
Meanwhile, on Cakewalk.com, the site sells many software. I've listed them below. Which one should I get?
SONAR X1 Producer
SONAR X1 Studio
SONAR X1 Essential
SONAR Home Studio 7
Guitar Tracks Pro 4
Music Creator 5
Studio Instruments
Dimension Pro
Z3TA+
Rapture
pyro Audio Creator
MP3 Encoder

Thank you!

If you are on a Mac you can use Garageband. But I'm guessing, if you are looking at Cakewalk, you are most likely on a PC. I would try:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

if you want to do simple piano sequences, you would be better to get an older version of cakewalk, whichever is the one before they started calling it sonar. i'm sure there are great features for audio recording and editing but for simple midi editing it is horribly bloated and missing a lot of basic features in the cheaper versions. i use sonar and hate it because cakewalk (6 i believe) will not run on win 7. now that i am thinking of it i should see if it will run under virtual xp because i really really hate using sonar for the simple things i do.

audacity is a sound recording and editing program. i use is all the time. it does have limited MIDI capabilities but it is certainly not sequencer and is not a Cakewalk substitute.

Re: [disklavier] Cakewalk

Good morning, everyone.

GarageBand is a cool program in many respects. Regrettably, it is only partially a MIDI program.

GB does record MIDI input. However, it does not have MIDI output. All MIDI playback uses the internal voices of the program.

GB offers no menu item for importing an existing MIDI file. However, you can simply drag a MIDI file into the main Garageband window to import it. At the moment, though, GB offers no way to save or export the edited MIDI file in MIDI file format.

Although it is not yet ready for release, you might want to keep your eye on Zenph Sound Innovation's Re-Performance MIDI editor (http://www.zenph.com/zenph-software/red.html). This is a piano-focused MIDI editor whose specialty is editing Disklavier files, including those high resolution XP MIDI files.

Regards,
PianoBench

The least expensive version of Sonar should work just fine. The more expensive versions just add a bunch of audio recording plug-in's and soft-synths, which you don't need.

Music Creator 5 (only this for a start)

It is a current (simple) version, full MIDI, and the price is very attractive.

Agree, older CAKEWALK versions are easier to use with MIDI, but harder to find.

Now days the MIDI interface should be USB with WIN drivers, no problem using this with CW MC5 under any flavor of WIN.

Best regards.

I'll prefer "CW MC5 SW" than MIDI freeware SW.

just remembered, the old cakewalk does not work with win 7 64 bit, it does work with 32 bit but it is probably easier to run virtual xp if you want to use an old cakewalk and not have to reboot to a 32 bit installation every time you want to run cakewalk.

I like gnmidi. Free with constant reminders - $30 or so to buy. For midi player pianos there is a wonderful feature "convert to PianoDisc" that outputs all tracks to channel 1 that plays your piano keys. Also can create and/or convert between midi 0 and midi 1 files.
