replacing the DSR-1 with a DKC850

replacing the DSR-1 with a DKC850

It depends on what model Disklavier the DSR-1 is attached. In your case, the original control box, DKC100R is a Mark II Disklavier. The DKC850 would connect with MIDI cables to your existing box and replace the DSR1 and DCD1. The only advantage you would get using the DKC850 over what you have is the ability to select playlists, but you would also need to purchase the USB floppy drive to get your current music into the new box. You would not be able to get internet radio.

I myself was wondering if the DSR-1 was attached to an even older Disklavier, like the MX100A/B built in model, could the new DKC850 attach to the DSR-1 using a second set of MIDI cables? I know that the DKC850 cannot be used directly with an MX100A/B.

"I have a DKC 100R/DSR 1/DCD 1 setup. Can I upgrade the DSR 1 to the 850 and what would be the benefit? Also, I presume I still need the DKC 100R. Are they still in production and if not, what alternative do I have if /when it dies?"

Good evening, everyone.

Carol, I think that although Yamaha does not promote the use of the DKC-850 with the MX100A/B, I see no reason why it could not replace a DSR-1 that is being used with one of the those instruments.

I have heard that certain early model Disklaviers can only be used with a secondary control unit if they have a working floppy drive with a disk inserted. If the drive goes bad, some of the functionality of the DKC-850 will be lost.
