Removing the speakers

Now that I've hooked up my Mark III grand to my home stereo I no longer need the speakers underneath the piano. I'm concerned that the speakers partially muffle the soundboard and that the sound might open up with them removed. Has anyone removed the speakers underneath a grand? If so, was it difficult to do and did you notice a signficant difference in the sound?
