SID chips are still pretty easy to come by and I don't think I've ever paid more than $15 for one. 30 million commodore 64 computers out there looking for some love. buy one for maybe $10-20 and use it as a SID tester. oddly enough, i have a tougher time finding 8580 chips than 6581 chips, even though most people seem to want the 6581. i guess there are actually a lot more 6581 chips out there in total. love my SIDstation, noisy as it is. love my hardSID quattro. i'm still waiting for the hardSID 4U pro to ship, but it's ordered. i will agree that you do have to watch out for the eBay sellers. some sellers are ok, others are without a doubt a shady lot.
beside all of that, it's still not really what i would go to for pads. but it's a great polysynth for other sounds.

SID chips are literally extinct last time I checked.

fetch quite a price on ebay.....and no guarantee that they function.
