DotCom Format Modules... how close?

DotCom Format Modules... how close?

2006-11-19 by Scott Deyo

Hello Group,

I'm starting the ball rolling on CGS and such in DotCom format, and
I'm wondering: how close do you guys want me to get graphically?
I can't match the tickmarks exactly. Is that a problem? If so, does
anyone have the graphic or a closer version than mine (which is not
very close :) ?
I was going to use a different font. Is this a major problem? I'm a
little torn between individuality and conformity. If individuality
means I won't sell many panels... I will obey.

Also, I'll be doing smaller runs of panels. What are the first five
on each person's list of modules? I'll compile these so I know what
order to make them in. Basically, you have any CGS, Tellun,Oakley or
Music from Outer Space module to go with. The Metasonix line will be
among the first :)
Please send your requests off-list...

Cheers,
Scott

I would not worry to much about being EXACTLY like the DotCom modules,
I am building a lot of my own modules and as long as they are the same
size format and black, I don't worry to much about the rest, my fonts
are a hair bigger than the DotCom ones, and my knob graphics are a bit
different, but they are close enough for me. The biggest problem I am
having, is finding knobs that look ok, the Dotcom knobs are 25mm($4
ea)and the ones I can get are 27mm ($1.50) I can also get some 20mm
for the same price, I would rather have them smaller than bigger, so
I'll probably try some of them. For your panels, you should make them
the way you want, after all they are your panels, not DotCom panels. I
know some people can be down right anal about how it looks, but
shouldn't we be more concerned about how it SOUNDS!

True that, Dave, true that.
I've decided to _not_ match anything 100%. I like my graphics better, I'm plenty busy as it is, and if I match graphics 100% then I would be expected to have the knobs, switches and LEDs match. Doing this in multiple formats, that raises my inventory very high indeed.
So there's that. Still working on the panels, and hope to have some DotCom modules out fairly soon.
I must admit I don't see the differences between expensive knobs and inexpensive knobs that look to me the exact same. I get mine from Jameco for $.50 apiece or so. I feel daft, but I put them next to MOTM knobs and can not tell the difference. Can't feel the difference either. And they have standard set screws instead of annoying hex. I'd much rather spend the extra money on Switchcraft jacks.
