Well... I made it here, too.

Well... I made it here, too.

Hey guys...

I'm all for this group, and it's posting rules... not getting
personal, etc. One thing that irratated me on the other group was
when someone would join... JUST to promote their new CD on ebay or
whatever. I'm not referring to Dana or any of the guys who were
regular members... I mean the ones who would join... post an ad with
a link... and then come back a week later to post another link.

IMO... contributing members have every right to post a link, promote
their music, sell some gear, etc. But not someone who obviously
joined just to sell their stuff. To me, this kind of thing is nothing
more than spamming the group.

Any other opinions on this?

The post spam and run crowd is why a lot of lists have moderated posting
for new members for the first few posts (not that I'm recommending it
here...). I hadn't been on the dotcom list for very long, but hadn't
noticed very much of it - except the one post for the ebay albums from the
eer music guy which annoyed some folks (he's on just about every
list/forum I'm on - he does seem to contribute more on a few other
lists...) - from the reaction it seems he only spammed the dotcom list.

Speaking of - I have a new cd! Nah - just kidding although I did have a
track pop up on a comp over the summmer... :-)

Hey Morb... :-)
Welcome aboard. I hope this list can pick right up where the dot com
list left off. 22 members already and its a pretty good looking
list. :-) And, I agree with your 100% Morb. However, I did not put
any controls over posting or membership. I didn't want anyone to
think I was a control freak. I got hel[p for that years ago...
Honest. :)

What I really hope is that Roger comes to his senses and re-opens his
list. He has the power to kick out and block trouble-makers and
spammers. Apparently, he never excercised that option.

Glad to be here, Larry. I didn't mean for my little thing about
spammers to sound like a rant... it really isn't. It's just that it
bugs me when they post and run. Nothin' to get worked-up about,
though.

I guessing that Roger was feeling overwelmed and perhaps like there
was no way to win no matter what he did. He mentioned to me that he
was embarassed to send people to the dotcom group because of all of
the childish bickering. I believe in spanking an unruly child... but
that's just me. I have to confess that one or twice a while back, I
may have crossed that threshold, too. But I'd like to think I've
gotten a bit more even tempered... well- that's my story, and I'm
sticking to it.

Oh jeeze... now I'm gonna have to set up email delivery to my 'real'
inbox (I really hated reading two posts, then having to navigate
around ads to get to the next posting. Oh well.

Welcome everyone... and let your patchcords be plentiful : )

Don't tease us. What was the comp? What was the track? What kind of music is it? What
instruments did you use?

Jacks and washers

2004-09-15 by Dana Countryman

Hey,

Can someone remind me where to get the quality jacks, in
quantity? I probably need about 20 for my upcoming Stooge
panel work.

One more thing, we need Zon in here. I hope someone has
invited him...

Onward,

- Dana

P.S. Oh! And don't worry, my CD won't be finished for about
another year...! So no plugs for a while....

BUT, I'm happy to report that I just lined up Dick Hyman and
Vinnie Bell to play on a few tracks (!!!) I'm flying back to New
Jersey in November for the sessions. Yee-Haw!

If anyone knows of a good, fairly-inexpensive studio near
Newark, where I can bring Digital Performer/Pro Tools tracks for
the sessions, please shine their info my way...

P.P.S.
Larry, did I ask you to drill out those panels for me? Can't
remember...

I think Roger also was "just" fed up. And it was too much - he just
moved etc. and he's got a lot of things arond at the moment (ok,
others do have too). I think "overhelmed" describes that pretty well.

  Michael.

I use nothing but Switchcraft 112a jacks, a long accepted inductry
standard for better gear. go at any electronics supplier and search
for 112a and you will find them.

At the bottom of my links page you will find good suppliers for
these:
http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/links.htm

The price breaks are usually at 25, 50, 100, 250. I actually buy
mine 250 at a time. :) And, different supplier have varied break
points. So, I always just search between the top 3 or 4 for the bext
price.

I may have missed him because I did not know his e-mail addy. I just
went to some recent posts and invited those I recognized in hopes
that members woudl spread the word. However, please feel free to
send me any names or addresses and I will send out official invites.
Of course, no invitation is required. :-)

I will be looking forward to it.

Time Machine, yes. Others, no.

I agree with Larry; go with Switchcraft 112A's.

Here are the big 4 for DIYers from Larry's site. Of course there are hundreds of suppliers out
there if you want to take the time hunting around.

   http://www.mouser.com - Mouser Electronics

   http://www.alliedelec.com -Allied Electronics

   http://www.digikey.com - Digi-Key Electronics

   http://www.newark.com - Newark Electronics

You will probably end up needing more jacks than you thought originally and have to order them
again in 6 months or a year. My suggestion is to jump up to the next price break (perhaps 50)
when you order to be prepared for the future.

The track I did is minimal, more "generated" in a way (there's probably a
proper name for whatever genre this is - but I don't know -
microsound(ish) in a vague way...). I normally play everything I record
live and almost never sequence so this is me sort of experimenting with
different techniques.

The album is 2 CD's - with half the songs by Jonathan Hughes, and the
other half by various artists (Tetsu Inoue, Ian Boddy, Susanne Brokesch,
Saul Stokes, High Skies (aka Gas on the em:t releases), dreamSTATE, ATOI,
etc...)

The 2 CD's are intended to be played together in shuffle mode at the same
time - so any track on disc one blends in with any track on disc two.
Each track is 6 minutes long - all are in similar keys. It was really an
interesting project to be a part of.

My track is a very simple pattern in Fruity Loops (although no sounds are
coming from Fruity...) generating about 11 midi notes (all middle C's for
what it's worth) out to my Korg DSS-1, Prophet 600, Juno 106, and Yamaha
TG-33. (I don't own a dotcom yet... it's in the works). Feedback loop
through a Korg SDD-1200 dual delay and Alesis Wedge reverb unit. I love
controlled feedback. The mixture of all the synths and a liberal amount
of knob twiddling throughout make it not seem like 11 repeated notes to
me. I'm also tossing in live playing on the Prophet on top of it all. It
was recorded live in one take - it's not multitracked.

You can hear a short snippet of the final mastered version on the album page:

http://foundrysite.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=29

Mine is the last track - "interstitial - indelible ink".

If you want to hear the whole thing - I only have a pre-mastered version
(it's lower in volume and not as clean) tucked away on my site - grab the
mp3 starting with "fluid_final..." 7.1mb from this directory:

http://www.interstitial.info/music/

If you want to hear something in a bit different style (mellower/ambient)
from me - check out "marco polo" about midway down my discography page:

http://www.interstitial.info/discog.html

This track mixes field recordings, me playing piano, synths, etc...
beatless. (grab "refraction" just under it if you want some more upbeat
drums... ;-)

John (Interstitial)

p.s. If you've never checked out Saul Stokes before... be sure to take
a look at his studio page - some really nifty custom modular stuff he's
put together - and his music is stunning.
