A few Effects I would love to see in MnM

2004-11-20 by tahvenaine2002

Hi,

I don't know what is the current situation of MnM OS, wether it's
under deveploment still or not. There was a plan of adding flanger,
phaser, distortion and filter fx's, when beta MnMs were released. I
like the effects which MnM allready has, but I also feel in this
price range (a top notch synth price range), it should have some
these fx's which seem to be standard in many other synths. It would
be nice.

As these plans are nice (wether they are real or not), I feel this
kind of effects don't occupy the possiablities of integrated
sequencer so much. They are more of feed-signal-thru-and-thats-it
effects, while MnM has a possiability to have effects that have never
seen in any other synths. Here are some examples that I've been
thinking:

1. Reverse
A simple fx-machine that take audio signal in it's buffer and while
note-on would be pressed it would play be buffer backwards. In a
common language: when you press any key, it would reverse the current
audio signal! Now put all your tracks thru this and sequence some
notes with and do parameter locks with hold parameter. a mind bogling
synth, that can play its synthesis backwards in time!!!

2. Freeze
Freeze works also with audiobuffer. In this fx-machine you would have
two knobs: buffer lenght and multiplier. Buffer lenght sets the
buffer size which will be repeated to infinity while note-on is
received (when note-off, the normal audio signal is led thru). With
buffer lenght, you could set some musical lenghts like 1/32th,
1/128th or even 1/256th of one measure. With multiplier you could
easily control this lenght; by multiplying it with 32X or 64X. Now
feed your tracks throught this and sequence some notes, with
parameter locks on buffer lenght and multiplier, instant elecro
mayhem, that cannot be made with any other synth! You could also have
the reverse fx machine after this, now MnM would become a synth, that
have never existed before. This would also be a deluxe version of
very popular MD e12-retrigger function, that people have liked so
much.

While I'm not right person to judge, wether these would be hard to
program, I still believe, that they would be easier to do than for
example rich-chorus or quality flanger (since they don't need any
high quality filtering or such).

These kind of machines would also be a benefit for MnM and Elektron:

1. They are the kind of fx-machines that don't make sense to develop
for synth that hasn't have a sequencer and since the sequencer is
what sets the MnM apart from the rest of the synths, this would be an
excellent way to show how MnM is capable of something more than other
synths.

2. Developing them, would (again) show the interaction how Elektron
listens their customers. They did it with MD OS 1.19 and it's pretty
unique in synth developers who actually listens, what people want
(rather than doing vintage emulation after vintage emultion
(discalimer: nothing wrong with vintage, so dont start..)).

Well, these were just some of thoughts. What do you people think?

Toni.
