whatever you do you should buy a sidstation, you clearly have the interest.
however, if you know yet, think about the sound that you want (perhaps
listen to an album by someone you like).  then try to break it up into the
individual sounds.  from there you can check out websites and download audio
samples to see what instruments make the sounds you want or need.

you must keep in mind, though, reading the above, that i am fairly anal and
have a very specific idea of what i want.  others (perhaps you are one of
them) prefer to just get an instrument and squeeze sounds out of it and keep
whats good.  in that case the sidstation wouldnt be a bad idea (just
remember you need a sequencer or audio recording program to record the
tracks into and perhaps a keyboard to play the sid).
