SV: [elektron] first synth tips

SV: [elektron] first synth tips

2001-02-21 by Mads Bredager

it looks like most of all you guys (no women??? he he) don't think i should
buy the ss as my first electronic music device. but why... like i said: "i'm
a newbie". i don't understand the difference between monophonic and
pylophonic. (though i think it's got something to do with the number of
voices).

is it rude to ask you to explain for me what the cool thing about the ss is
and the not so cool? and why i should buy an roland sh-101, novation bass
station or korg EA-1 instead (except for the price - i figured that out
myself).

cheers!

the sid ststion is not only monophonic, it's three voice poly/mono. also,
i think someone said it had one midi channel...not true...it has 1-16.
and although i think korg's ER-1 is the coolest drum machine to come out
in a long time, for any price and any expercience level, i thing the EA-1
synth sounds like crap.

get an older analogue mono synth like a roland sh-101, novation bass
station, roland juno-60, a bunch of old korg stuff, ect. ect.

peace, ksg

Hold up. Don't listen to them. Listen to me. Buy the sid. It was my
first synth. And it is currently my only synth. I don't even have a
keyboard to drive it, I just hook it up to my computer with midi cables,
and that's it. Buy it. I never owned a c64, so I didn't even buy it for
nastalgia reasons. I bought it 'cause I found some samples of it on some
webpage and fell in love.

the sid station is a cool instrument but it is a bad mistake to buy it
thinking that it is something else. the SS is a synth that has 3 oscilators
which means 3 sources of signals that can be mixed together i.e. monosynth
mode which means you can play only one note at a time like a flute or a
trumpet... or in poly mode you have up to 3 sounds at a time i.e. you can
play chords or harmonies up to 3 voices at a time.
from a Midi standpoing it is not multitibral which means that when you record
the sid station to a midi sequencer you can only record onto one midi channel
(1-16) but never more than 1 because the SS will not transmit or receive
seperate midi channels.
you said that you are not familiar with midi well in the most basic manner
think of midi as the ability to record different voices on different midi
channels and the ability to play them back on those channels. sort of like a
tape that has many tracks (like a four track or so) that you can record to it
one track at a time and then play back the whole arrangement of tracks to
listen to the whole picture.

The sid station is best to compliment an existing setup. not as a first synth.

and by the way..I know it is not so appropriate but if you are simply in love
of the sid sound (like myself and others here i'm sure) there is also a sound
card that is called HardSid Quattro (sorry elektron) which uses sid chips as
well and in fact you can drive 4 chips from the same card to have them played
as a multitimbral instrument on seperate midi channel. I own the SidStation
and the Quattro card and they both compliment each other for an ultimate sid
machine.

hope this helps

whatever you do you should buy a sidstation, you clearly have the interest.
however, if you know yet, think about the sound that you want (perhaps
listen to an album by someone you like). then try to break it up into the
individual sounds. from there you can check out websites and download audio
samples to see what instruments make the sounds you want or need.

you must keep in mind, though, reading the above, that i am fairly anal and
have a very specific idea of what i want. others (perhaps you are one of
them) prefer to just get an instrument and squeeze sounds out of it and keep
whats good. in that case the sidstation wouldnt be a bad idea (just
remember you need a sequencer or audio recording program to record the
tracks into and perhaps a keyboard to play the sid).
