What I am looking for is this:

The ease of programming that a 606/808/909 gives you. This makes it
fun to play around with and encourages you to explore new rhytmical
content. Within the 1/16 limit that is. I love to sit with my 606,
just tapping in new rhythms to see what comes out.

Sounds! Important stuff. There will always be people looking for the
ultimate kickdrum, but that should not be the selling point (Yamaha
FS1r provides some great kicks by the way). Interesting sound that
inspires you!

Tweakability. Enough said.

Groove! Just look at the Akai MPC-series. They have their great
quantisation templates that you can apply to a rhythm to make it
groove.
