MAchineDrum Sound clips

2001-02-22 by revtor@aol.com

Hey now you nay-sayers.. I like those sound clips...
Lots of Low 808 thunder bass, lots of nice noisy hats/snares and a few
squiggly electronic sounds..
What do you guys expect anyway? How far can you push a bassdrum anyway?
drums are drums!! Analog/digital argument doesn't mean shit when the sounds
are MP3's !!!
MachineDrum has new synth methods so new sounds are only 2 short months away..
Wacked out electronica.. elektron's specialty !!

cool, now I definitely want one!!!!

Maybe if Elektron didnt hype it up for so long, our expectations
wouldn't be so high?? Looks like their promotion might have back-fired on
them.....

Shoot, whats the dealio, yo?!?

I think those MP3's are pretty damn tight! Its not like any "factory demo"
is going to make you wanna sell your mama to buy the product... its up to
the individual to find that level of power themselves. As far as I can
tell, the actual synthesis used to make these sounds is what the "big deal"
is all about. We might have to wait for more information on those 4 synths
inside the box before we can say "its shit" or "its the shit".

Like I said, I really dig the sounds they got out of it - but then Im a big
fan of Kraftwerk... that was the first thing I thought of when I heard the
machinedrum.

Of course, if the price is over $1000, then Im not going to be interested in
it anyways.

I think most of you will like what there is when you get the whole
picture. The cool thing about Machinedrum is that it has new synthesis
methods for percussion sounds. ER-1 also had - but it is limited to _one_
single synthesis engine. It's like one of the Machines in Machinedrum.
(Each synth has several machines) It's also about the way it is allowed to
be controlled. A DX-7 might have a cool sound engine, but it's not
inspiring to use (I think). An 808 is inspiring to use, but the sound
engine is limiting (although what's there is really good).

As for the hyping, it's hard to mediate the whole picture in one big chunk
of information. I rather take it step by step. With a small company of
only 5 people we have to divide the time between development and
marketing. For the Machinedrum we've put most efforts in development which
have made the information rather sparse. But I think the development is
what has been most important so far. For me it's imporant to have a good
product before marketing.

You who have expected a 909-clone with a massive bassdrum as main
attraction might be disappointed. That might have been the most logical
thing looking at the synthesizer market today. But that has never been our
intention. Elektron isn't about improving existing as much as it is about
creating innovative sources sounds. It will not be for everyone, but some
will love it.

Stay open minded!

Daniel

What I am looking for is this:

The ease of programming that a 606/808/909 gives you. This makes it
fun to play around with and encourages you to explore new rhytmical
content. Within the 1/16 limit that is. I love to sit with my 606,
just tapping in new rhythms to see what comes out.

Sounds! Important stuff. There will always be people looking for the
ultimate kickdrum, but that should not be the selling point (Yamaha
FS1r provides some great kicks by the way). Interesting sound that
inspires you!

Tweakability. Enough said.

Groove! Just look at the Akai MPC-series. They have their great
quantisation templates that you can apply to a rhythm to make it
groove.

/Janne

My thinking :
as far as today, I like 309 a lot. Quasimidi have a real good thought
on how they put up their instruments as far as I know. They look like
your average fanboy to me. Not different from the Elektron guys, which
is why I like them so much (ASSLICKER!!!!!!). The 309 is the one I
like the best today. I don't own one because I was very disapointed
with the weak and deaf sounds. Can't have your ears bleeding with it.
But it 's the box I prefer today. Cool programming, HUGE tweakability
and all (heard midi was disapointing though...). I feel the MAchine
drum will be a lot similar in the feeling that was put to build it.
Real well thought. If it can get my ears to bleed and I can afford it,
this will be my drum machine. That's my word.
And I hope hope hope !!!!!!
More than a month to go !!!

i was going to say before, but mr. hansson has beat me to it, that i dont
think that they had a big plan of lathering us all up for the machinedrum
(perhaps they did). rather i think electron is just a small company telling
us information as they have the time and interest.
