SV: [elektron] My first machine...

SV: [elektron] My first machine...

2001-02-22 by Mads Bredager

any suggestions of what to read?

i just want a machine that has THE sound. and the sidstation has that. but
as written before, im a complete newbie, and the more help from any of you
the better! :)

it's very importent to me that i can just sit down and play with it... just
turning the knobs and create vivid soundscapes... i really don't need any
fancy looking thing with 100 millions of sounds and
multi-midi-extravaganza-poly-stereo-phonic-rombler.

i just want to know whether the ss is the machine for me or not. and if
buying a keyboard, to trigger the midi, is a must - then i'll buy that too!

You might want to pick up a book or two first and do some studying. It'll
be hard to make a good choice for yourself otherwise and it would suck to
pay large amounts of cash for something that turns out to not fill your
needs.

To help direct you though, what exactly are you looking to do? The more
specific the better...

come to think of it, what might be best for starters is a sampler. From
there, u can create ur own synth patch's and drum tracks. a sampler would
also re-inforce those skills needed later on in sequencing and recording. I
use a EMU ESI-2000...a cheep and great machine. With a box such as that, the
only gear u need added, would be a midi keyboard (MK-4902 = good generic
midi keyboard at any mars or guitar center), and a external midi sequencer
(ie. computer, or hardware midi sequencer). A portable mini disc recorder is
great for sampling, u can use a mic, or just plug line in's into it, from
any source. But also, if u desided to get a sid later, u'd already have the
gear hanging around to use it, and exploit it. It is very important u get
what u need first off. I"m not saying this is what u NEED, but its where i
wish i had started. I started with drum machines, which isn't bad...but now
i'm rather impatient when it comes to synth programming :)

so remember this stuff
EMU ESI-2000
Kawai Q80EXe (www.kraftumusic.com)
Mk-4092 (midi keyboard)
sony Mini DIsc

anywayz...good luck
and don't feel rushed to get a sid. there is gonna be plenty on the used
market. check with synthsite.com and there classifieds for good deals

I you want THE sound, then Sid might be the shit. THE sid sound that is.
If you wanna sit down and have much fun and want GREAT sound but don't
really mind THE 8 bits sound, JP8000 (same price as SS on second hand
market) or Korg MS 2000 are probably what you'd prefer.... I think. TO
sit down and enjoy, I think they're much better & much easier to use
and program. Hey, all the knobs are out there. THink about that.

buy it and get a cheap key board. if you don't like it you can sell it at
pretty much the same value cause eventually these things (ss) are going to be
extinct. You are also going to need a drum machine and some sort of sequencer
to get started. and later down the line a sampler. Those are the basics. If
you are serious about getting in to music invest in the instruments you want
cause some where down the road your going to wish you had if you didn't.
Don't worry about not knowing things like midi and all the other crap,
you'll learn.
