If you have a VST capable sequencer (are there still non existing ? ;>)) 
then try out Microtonic.  www.soniccharge.com.
 This is a hell of a pattern based drum computer based on synthetic generated sounds.
I own it and it comes close to MD in some aspects...except the price which is about 1/20th.

I can send you some samples I made with it, and compare them to MD.  
You won't notice the difference.  But the MD has still a lot more possiblities.
