Midi gets mildly complicated because only one thing can be going down 
the wire at a time. For example, you'll see some unavoidable lag by the 
nature of it even among notes that are supposed to play within the same 
step as each other.

That said, could you give an idea of the lag in terms of milliseconds, 
and how much stuff you have going on when you encounter it? I'm curious 
to know if it is just midi protocol's humble speed or something else.
