Midi gets mildly complicated because only one thing can be going down 
the wire at a time. For example, you'll see some unavoidable lag by the 
nature of it even among notes that are supposed to play within the same 
step as each other.

That said, could you give an idea of the lag in terms of milliseconds, 
and how much stuff you have going on when you encounter it? I'm curious 
to know if it is just midi protocol's humble speed or something else.

Gear: 	SFX-6
		Yamaha A3000 V2 sampler connected directly from Mono's MIDI
OUT
				

Visible lag of the sampler in comparison to SFX6 (recorded on ProTools LE,
Digi 001, PowerMac G4 1,25):
1 machine on sfx6, 1 MIDI out track:	4ms
2 machines on sfx6, 1 MIDI out track:	8ms
3 machines on sfx6, 1 MIDI out track:	12ms
(with a "note on" on all 3 machines and MIDI out at the same step)

Looks like each note at the same step adds another 4ms lag which makes the
problem more complicated than I thought. We can easily get a 48ms lag with
12 tracks, which is not only visible but audible as well (or shall I call me
Batman?)

Never thought about "one thing can be going down the wire at a time".
