Both - 

Some of the sounds will be sample based.  You'll be able to tune 
up/down etc and have a little control but the underlying waveform is 
what you get - this is very much like the Alesis SR-16, BOSS DR-660, 
etc.

There are also a 4 part Virtual Analog synth engine in there.  This 
will allow you to do things like select a basic waveform (ie. saw, 
square, sin, etc.), apply envelopes, lfos, filters, etc.  This is 
somewhat like a traditional analog drum machine like a 808/909 but 
really seems to be more like one of the modern VA synths like the 
Nord, the Virus, etc.  Presumably the set of parameters you have to 
work w/ will be a smaller subset than one of those synths more 
focused on percussive synthesis then general synthesis.
