1. Plug an external synth's midi in to the mono's midi out
2. Function + Trig Select (switches from internal machines to midi  
machines for the six tracks.  Important to note that your internal  
machines do not stop functioning, they run alongside, though they do  
share LFOs)
3. Press keys on your mono and you'll hear sound come out of your synth.

If this doesn't work, in the global setup for the monomachine there's  
a midi seq section which defines midi channels for each of the midi  
tracks (tracks 1 - 6 are midi tracks when you go into midi machine  
mode).  Make sure the midi channel for the track you want to use to  
sequence the external synth is set to the appropriate midi channel  
that your external synth is listening to.
