Since I can't assume exactly what you do and don't know already, please 
forgive me if I mention something that may sound trivial.

Make sure the MM midi OUT port is connected to the cable MIDI IN, and 
vice versa.

Create a MIDI track.  In that midi track you need to select the Input 
your MM is connected to.  Like Soudblaster or MP401 Midi.... sometimes 
onboard midi have weird names,  you'll have to figure it out. This will 
allow you to record the midi sent from MM. Set the output to your device 
as well for it to be able to playback what you record.
