That's exactly my train of thought too, I just have a few very nice tools that I know well to play with. MD-UW, TI-K, and Kontakt 2 (coming soon) for realistic instruments and sample mangling. I find I'm far mroe productive that way, and more willing to try out new things versus spending hours scrolling through presets. The MD and TI compliment each other nicely BTW.
