Isn't supposed to do anything, but if you want for some odd reason to have machines on monomachine tracks that don't do anything, you can set it so. I could see it's used when exchange from kit to another in live use and don't want new kit to react the settings from old kit; then GND would be kind of usefull. So maybe it's there because it can be used to put one track to non-responsive situation. I feel it can be usefull, when people are constructing their gear set, with multiple machines that send midi-information to another. Just setting volume level to zero, would be unsatisfactory in some situations. Toni.
