the FMR compressors sound very different from each other. the RNC is way smooth and i find it pretty transparent but also can do some aggro style "sucking" compression.. i love the "supernice mode". i used it on a short tour and it really helped things out in various venues.. the RNLA is very different.. sounds a lot more colored and not nearly as subtle.. it's punchy.. it works well for drums.. i love it neither of the compressors are one trick ponies.. they both are quite versatile little boxes and you get sooooooo much for your $$ if you just want dirty nasty sounds then you have a lot out there... there are more cheap compressors that do that than there are ex-soap opera actors. really.. there's tons of them.. just fish around in pawn shops and any music store that favors trade in stuff or has a decent used dept. my friend got a really nasty old shure compressor last week that distorts wonderfully.. but that's all it does well. alternately if you want something good look for a midrange tube compressor or the FMR RNLA. the alesis 3630 might be worth a look and you can modify them too. are you familiar w/tape op magazine? they have run 2 articles on how too mod your 3630. here's one: http://www.blacklionaudio.com/alesis_3630_mod.html happy hunting :) --- In elektron-users@yahoogroups.com, Mark Rivera <marr@...> wrote: > > >> I def hear great things about the FMR audio gear like the previous poster, > > > > yeah, everybody says they're great but on the other hand these are supposed > > to be "transparent" compressors without adding too much color to the sound, > > and it's this tone shaping possibilities that I'm looking for. > > I have an FMR 'really nice compressor' - I agree it definitely falls in > the transparent category.
