Re: [elektron] MachineDrum Gig Issue

2006-07-27 by synthyscott

I've run my laptop off of a generator (with my Belkin UPS as the "power strip") and had no problems, but never tried the MD with a generator. It sounds like the MD didn't like the unclean AC power from the generator. Although I have not verified that these will work in your particular situation, I think these are your best options: a regulator and a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Here are some options in order of the features you need and their cost-effectiveness.

Note: I would recommend getting the longest duration battery backup that you can afford (and that you're willing to lug around - the longer the battery backup, the bigger/heavier the unit gets). Also, if you get a UPS or combination regulator/UPS, you will have to charge the UPS battery for 8 hrs. before usage in order for the battery backup to work.

1.) Consumer-grade regulated and battery-backed (i.e. UPS) power supply (e.g. APC Back-UPS LS, RS, and Pro series)

2.) Consumer-grade regulated power supply (e.g. APC Line-R series)

3.) Pro audio-grade regulated power supply (e.g. Furman AR series)

4.) Consumer-grade UPS - you can find these at any Office Depot or equivalent store, but it might not help your MD. (not sure about this)

Hope this helps!

  Subject: [elektron] MachineDrum Gig Issue

  Hello,

I was recent played a gig with my MachineDrum and a laptop, my
partner also had a laptop. We've used this setup numerous times
before - both out at gigs and practicing at home. At this most recent
gig, the machine drum acted a bit strangely -- when it was plugged in
to the power strips and sound ran through the main system the LCD on
the MachineDrum would pulse in time with the beat... ultimately
causing the MD to reboot and/or freeze. The pulsing only seemed to
happen with volume was put through the main system - not the booth
  monitors.

The power was run off a generator (this was an outdoor event) and
most everything was being run off the same generator. None of the
other equipment (laptops, mixer, CD players...) seemed to be affected.

Any thoughts on why this was happening and what I can do to prevent
  it in the future?

  Michael
