Re: [elektron] MachineDrum Gig Issue

2006-07-27 by synthyscott

The only reason I would suggest to him a regulator+UPS instead of just a UPS is that if the UPS kicks the battery backup on and off to the beat, there are a few possible issues (1) it is unknown if that rapid on/off switching will make the UPS malfunction or fail and (2) if the battery does get switched on and off on every beat of the music, it will probably run out much sooner than his live set is complete.

I'd say be safe and get a combo regulator+UPS if you're playing on a regulator.

My guess would be that the MD is a bit sensitive to voltage fluctuations. If the main PA amps were using a lot of power, that may cause the voltage from the generator to "dip" in time with the music. A laptop wouldn't be affected, since it has a battery that would even out these fluctuations. I would recommend running sensitive and "critical" gear on a small UPS, and not directly on the generator. At leat, if you're on the same power source as the PA and light rig, you should use a filter (APC or similar) to get rid of "spikes" and other noise on the power line...

  Subject: [elektron] MachineDrum Gig Issue

  Hello,

I was recent played a gig with my MachineDrum and a laptop, my
partner also had a laptop. We've used this setup numerous times
before - both out at gigs and practicing at home. At this most recent
gig, the machine drum acted a bit strangely -- when it was plugged in
to the power strips and sound ran through the main system the LCD on
the MachineDrum would pulse in time with the beat... ultimately
causing the MD to reboot and/or freeze. The pulsing only seemed to
happen with volume was put through the main system - not the booth
  monitors.

The power was run off a generator (this was an outdoor event) and
most everything was being run off the same generator. None of the
other equipment (laptops, mixer, CD players...) seemed to be affected.

Any thoughts on why this was happening and what I can do to prevent
  it in the future?

  Michael
