Re: [elektron] Is it possible to stop all the spammers?

2006-11-27 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

Strange, I get individual email notification of any moderated messages which tells me that it is coming from someone who is new and hence moderated. If I am lazy, I can just respond to the message and it lets the message go through (but it doesn't de-moderate the user (I have emailed yahoo about this since such would be a GREAT feature for us moderators-- allowing a quick re email to both let the message in and de-moderate the sender somehow). Anyway, cheers!

  i used to moderate all new members until they made a legit post;
exactly as you described below. however, yahoo would never notify me
that there were pending messages (and hence, members) to approve. so
unless i looked for it (which i didn't, because posts are delivered to
my email box), i didn't see the pending messages and didn't approve
new members. at the time, spam wasn't a problem so i set the group to
allow any new members. obviously this isn't working right now.

i've added another moderator (scott aka glaive, whom most of you might
know from handling www.elektron-users.com) and i've set both his and
my options to moderate all incoming members.

  hope that helps!

spam I approve the message and change their status. It is not as time
consuming as approving all members when they join. Often, folks join
and don't post for months. But the first time they do, yes I have to
go through a minor hassle. Sometimes their posts have to wait a few
days until I can get to it, but after that it is smooth sailing and
the groups are spam free. Perhaps you may make a few other trusted
folks moderators and do it that way. If you can't do what needs to be
done all by yourself, share and delegate.
