The graphs are notes, the height represents an arbitrary note, say C and 
E.  The first graph shows a repetitive pattern played with alternating 
tones.

The second graph shows a bit of randomness of the first graph where a 
couple of the notes are played at an octave higher.

I believe he wants the pattern to have a bit of note randomness to it, 
but for the amount changed to be exactly an octave of what would 
normally be programmed at that beat.
