very strange midi behavior from the MnM

2007-05-14 by Tony Scharf

I have completely run out of ideas on this, but its driving me crazy.

If I either use the MnM to sequence external gear, or send midi data to gear
via the MnM's thru port, certain pieces of gear in my studio start to go
absolutely crazy (i.e. stuck notes, held notes cutting out, lock ups and
freezes). What I dont get is that the MnM doesnt even have to be playing
*anything* for this to happen. For example, if I plug my MPC1000 into the
input on the MnM, and then take the thru port into my PEK, the pek goes
crazy with cutting off notes, and its sequencer timing gets all messed up.
my TG33 and Proteus 2500 both start getting bad stuck notes. my clavia G2
just completely looses it, locking up and playing random notes. If i remove
the MnM from the equation, and just go straight from MPC to
PEK/TG33/P2500/G2, then all is well and I dont see this at all.

I have also attempted sequencing the PEK and G2 from the MnM. I get the
same type of wierd behaviors then, but it seems somehow associated with
having a track in the MnM that is running an Arpegiator (internal or MIDI
track, gives the same results).

It is really baffling, and makes the MIDI tracks on the MnM effectively
useless for me.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ive tried changing cables, and capturing
the MIDI coming out in MIDI OX, but everything *looks* normal. its the
strangest kind of bad voodoo ive run across in a piece of modern gear.

Tony
