Happened to me yesterday again with the MD: Was working on a kit sequencing from the outside. Save kit. Do a further update, play for a few hours doing other stuff with the evolver. Fat finger hits the "extended" knob and boom. I already do make backup copies when i know I am going to be doing a drastic edit. the unit is very easy to fat finger though and delete a pattern when you meant only to delete a track, or to delete when you meant paste and so forth.
