sorry... i know i am not supposed to be using this thread within a thread.
but...
i figured it out... the cheap Chinese USB MIDI interface i was using was labeled backwards... i swapped the out for the in and it worked like a charm

I may add (in general, pick accordingly) :
- decent MIDI interface and cable (obvious)
- NO clock transmitted by the MIDI interface when you upgrade (so some
interface will NEVER work, like some creamware card for example) (if
there's a clock on, it won't, never, ever upgrade)
- hassle free main power (bad mains don't go fine with Elektron stuff,
most MD freeze) If the mains are dirty, use a UPS or a main filter of
some sort.
