That's like saying cheap transistor radios would have never been
made. The fallacy with such logic is that it attempts to explain
the evolutionary existence of a system without regarding it as
a component of a larger system.
Specifically, you see the connectors as a solution to your problem,
when really, they're a solution to solve the business problem of
selling audio equipment. The format survived because is extremely
inexpensive to produce.
