One technique I use is I will control the MD using an external sequencer that acts as the midi clock source. This of course can be something software based or hardware based such as the MPC - I've used both. O.K. that is obvious, but to take advantage of the "parameter lock" features of the MD (one of its strongest points in my opinion), I will program all my patterns in extended mode on the MD of course. I will then trigger these patterns from the external sequencer. This is done by setting up the midi mapping in the global settings of the MD. You can assign a midi note (which corresponds to a midi note number) to a particular pattern number on the MD. You can even map individual sounds of your kit to these midi note numbers and trigger them externally. The MD comes from the factory with patterns A01 to A16 already mapped to certain midi notes. You can of course change these and also map the additional pattern banks B thru H. So when you play back your external sequencer, you can decide where you want the MD to come in and out of the song and instantly switch between patterns and at any given point in time which by the way performs better than I thought it would. I thought there would be some lag time when switching between patterns that use entirely different kits, but it actually does this quite smoothly just as it does when using the MD's internal sequencer. With this technique I've discovered new and rather exciting ways of MD programming and incorporating it into my tracks as a whole. Playing partial patterns, switching between two rapidly, etc. For any MPC users out there this is a great way to use the MD with the MPC. For example, one bank of my MPC directly maps to various patterns on the MD. With the touch of the pad, I can kick off the MD in sync with what I'm doing on the MPC and make the MD do some crazy stuff. As an interesting side note, I was experiencing some occasional instances where I could not "boot up" the OS of the MD when switching it on. I contacted Elektron, and they indicated to me there is a known bug if you initialize your midi mapping settings in the MD (setting them to basically map to nothing), the OS won't boot correctly. At one point I had done just that, initialized my midi map setting to nothing not knowing the consequences. They indicated to me this would be fixed in the next OS release. Luckily if any one ever has this problem, you can always access the function menu. You can do a "Soft Reset" to make it boot properly again. However, be forewarned, this will initialize ALL your global settings in the MD when you do this (but not your kits and patterns thankfully)!! I found this out the hard way. So always do a sysex backup of your MD. But I'm confident Elektron will continue to make improvements to it's stability - they already have. Happy machine drumming. -nate ----- Original Message ----- From: Eric Peterson <eric@...> To: <elektron-users@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2002 7:32 PM Subject: [elektron] MD songs locked to software sequencer? > I'm trying to integrate the MD with my CubaseSX sequencing rig.
