A lot depends of what you want to do. Flavio is right. I may add:

Sequencers/audio editor: (from the MIDI workhorse to the audio workhorse)

-Logic (can even fry eggs in midi, not easy but powerfull)
-DP (before long under X, certainly more friendly than Logic)
-Protools (very easy to use)

Cubase SX is better than Cubase was, but Nuendo is better still. Only Nuendo
is looked at as pro. However, Cubase is more

There are new softs in X like Metro (ex cakewalk) and less know new stuff
like five12 Numerology (modular analogue sequencer like)

Some users have adopted some already, you'd better have a look in our OSX
forums for these.

Ableton Live is GREAT! but no midi save sync

On interfaces

The Mbox is great if you need a good preamp (focusrite inside) and max 2
audios streams. I can't tell you how it interface with other software under
X as Digidesign stuff will be X from the 16th on only.

Else you can use MOTU, RME, Emagic (great bundles), Presonus (soft still
uncomplete) wich are the pro/semipro choices.

I have no hands on experience on the USB stuff but it seems better in X than
in OS9 (some drivers were awfull)

Interface like it depends a lot of what you want to do with.
