I have read the very good suggestions given to you so far...  and
those are definitely worth trying out.

I am also wondering, however, if what you may be referring to is the
intentional overuse of attack/release times on a compressor when it is
inline with a bass drum track.  Have you tried sending your bass drum
out one of the individual outputs, then abusing a compressor on a send
of that track it to get a sort of pumping or breathing effect to the
bass?

Or am I way off 'bass' here?   :)
