Thanks for the replies.  I should have mentioned that I'm working in 
extended mode, sorry.  I'll check the local control setting when I get 
back to my MD, though - that sounds like a possible candidate.  I've 
been experiencing some other strange behavior from the MD (like the 
midi machines causing strange things to happen when certain notes are 
assigned) so it could be I'm just suffering from some kind of midi 
feedback.

Actually, does anyone work in Classic mode, anyway?  I've not felt any 
need to switch out of Extended since I got the MD.
