I make alot of synth sounds with the sampler machines. I forget the 3 letter name for it. Just turn up the retriger. Adjust pitch for a kind of filter effect, maybe phasing. Use trigger time for note pitch. Add a little start. Adjust decay to your liking. I remember using bass drum. I think the higher sounding drum samples may be more string like. Delay does not sound so good. You may want to try to use the multi trigger possibility to make more strings. Copy the same lead type sound and have one trigger maybe two for a more chord sound.
