Please, never compare analogue/digital stuff on the effects.

THERE IS NO EFFECTS in most analogue stuff
1/ analogue effectes are expensive to build
2/ most analogue stuff don't need effects ;)
3/ background noise in analogue is part of the sound (for example: when you
crank up resonance you add resonnance to the noise too ;) héhé)

Now your friend given his setup is strimlining it and expanding its range of
sounds :)
