Hi Phillip,
The MD as the others have said, excells at digital sounds. With a great deal
of care and a bit of EQ it can also sound very analog and sometimes even
very 'real'. It all depends on how you use it and what you call analog and
digital (quick hint here for general synth use.... roll off frequencies
above about 6k with a 12dB filter and your digital synths begin to sound
remarkably analog... a bit static perhaps, but in a mix you would have to
have very good ears to tell - ah the digital/analog debate... nearly as
devisive and confusing as the mac/pc debate =0)).
The second question has been answered already, but I would argue that many
of the MDs parameters have less than 127 steps, as thay become quite
unusable at high settings. There is some hope that Elektron may sort this
out in a future update, but don't hold your breath.
As to your last question - the xBase is a killer drum machine for dance
music with (IMHO) the fattest kick drum ever (side by side with a 909, the
xBase really is the king.... fat as hell and much less noise). If I had the
money I would have both, no question about it. However, if you are only
going to have one drum machine, then the MD is surely the only choice,
especially if you intend to do any music that does not fall into the full on
dance bracket. The MD offers so much more than just drums.
Hope this helps =0)
thinking happy thoughts
