i have used the fireworx extensively and it's an incredibly powerful fx
unit.
its  midi sync works great for low fi telephone delay stuff and the
distortion is very cool.
you can link lots of different engines together, to create all kinds of
stuff.
yes it generates tones and noise like a synth , but doesn't work like a
conventional keyboard.
this and the orville eventide are my two favorite fx boxes.
