I'm suprised to see this question from a MD user.
It's such an inspiring machine...........

What i've been doing lately for the more accesable beats is 
experimenting a lot with toms. Make them a bit softer, longer and 
lower. Try different interactions between them, then you can move the 
other hits around them (kick, snare , hihat)
You'll be suprised how easy it is to make interesting beats with 
sounds very easy but are not the average 4 on the floor.
