Other house beats?

Other house beats?

2003-08-08 by W. Brent Latta

We've been writing a lot of trance/dance/house type tracks lately for
our upcoming shows (to encourage more dancing!). I'm getting a bit
tired of the old 4 on the floor with the "takatsss takatss takatss" of
the open and closed hi hat pattern with the snare or clap on 2 and 4.
Are there any other simple and effective dance beats out there?
Everything I try, while cool to, seems to complex to be "great" in the
minds of the masses...

Try some lfo on the decay of the BD. Put some delayed claps on # 2 5
9 and 13.

Use a four bar loop. Make thee 1st and 3rd similar and the 2nd and
4th similar. Make the 4th bar more complex. Have that snare on 2 and
4 but in the fourth bar have a snare with lower volume on #9. More HH
on the 4th too.

I'm suprised to see this question from a MD user.
It's such an inspiring machine...........

What i've been doing lately for the more accesable beats is
experimenting a lot with toms. Make them a bit softer, longer and
lower. Try different interactions between them, then you can move the
other hits around them (kick, snare , hihat)
You'll be suprised how easy it is to make interesting beats with
sounds very easy but are not the average 4 on the floor.

GRtz. Ronald.

I can post a few examples if interested.

There are tons of different breakbeat patterns out there. A simple
2-step beat would work just fine, and it sounds funky and gets people
going... Try it out! :)

I have a book that you might want to check out. It's called "Drum
Machine Rhythm Dictionary", and it's by Sandy Feldstein. Lots of
good starter patterns in there.

Agree!
Stop that 4/4 BD boring thing and start making breakbeat!
(I also love house music, I'm just joking)

You might want to listen to the track I've talked about in a previous
post, that has a good MD break.
It's on http://www.acme.dj/tunes.html (ok I won't bother you anymore
with this)

Other hint: learn some drums.
That will help much with drum creativity and make your drum patterns
more "real".
And be creative, try new things! That's easy to do with a MD... that
little beast just asks us to :-)

Don't misunderstand me, all. I DO make my own beats with the MD and
they are unique and creative. Believe it or not, I sometimes feel that
to get people moving your music must be a bit more accessible. My
musical world is big enough for both accessible and not-so-accessible
music. :)

That said, thanks for the pointers. I'll give them a try. Also...can
someone explain what 2-step is? I have heard it for years, but I
couldn't define it if I tried...

  Start with this article:

(watch the wrap)

Those are some good starter patterns to build on... Just make sure
that you have a nice crisp snare.
