I wanted the MD because I wanted highly customizable percussion sounds. the depth of sounds it can create is outrageous. and I'm excited about the MM for the exact same reason. BUT I should note that in my opinion the MD would still sound great using an external sequencer, but the internal sequencer and interface is what really breathes life into it (soundwise). if the MM is the same way, I'm not sure how you'll feel given what you've previously stated regarding the MD/MM and sequencers.
