Yes,  I like the kit idea in combination with a single patch management
solution.  You could save your kit as normal, but you could maybe just
import or load independently the machines from other kits without copy and
pasting all over the place.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
