There's a couple thins that might help set you up:
1) in the global menu, under control->MIDI channels, check that the
channels aren't conflicting with what your external synth is sending the
mono; if it is, try changing those channels (or eliminating the use of
channels entirely, for features you don't need right now); specifically,
check that the channel span and multimap channels don't conflict with
what your external synth is sending the mono

2) in the global menu, under MIDI SEQ->MIDI SEQ SET, set the channels up
that you want to use in the MIDI sequencer
