I am definitely using my MD for hiphop style music and beats. Let me start by saying that the MD is two different things in one: a drum-sound synthesizer and a sequencer. The MD sequencer is incredible for hiphop, absolutely stunning, no more need be said - except that it can sequence/write for external modules as well, so I often use it to trigger samples or other synths. The drum-sound synth on the other is, indeed, often more used for tech/house/lectro type applications, because it is very easy to come up with fucked up electronic sounds. However, 2 of its four synths are heavily based on the 808/909 and the Emu SP12, respectively, which were the two drum machines that created hiphop (pre MPC). So my recommendation is absolutely go for, with the caveat that the MD excels much more at 'snappy', synthy sounding drums (think Neptunes, Grandmaster Flash, Dre) than, say, DJ Shadow-type breakbeats. Which isn't to say that it necessarily sounds clean or polished or commercial, it can be very dirty and raw. Last thing to say is that, the samples on the web don't do it justice; nothing can until you start tweaking sounds and puitting together your own patterns on it. Hope that helps. Puretokyo.
