MD for abstract hiphop type productions

MD for abstract hiphop type productions

2004-01-08 by navintheebs

Is anyone out there using a Machinedrum combined with the typical
sample based hiphop production? If so, I am wondering how you have
been feeling about the results. I produce instrumental stuff with a
solid base in hiphop and sample heavy from old vinyl. I currently
use some real synths and various software to enhance my sampling and
the Machinedrum seems to have a lot to offer that area of music.
Most people seem to veer more towards the techno/house area, so of
course I have heard little in the way of hiphop styled Machinedrum
music.

Thanks.

I am definitely using my MD for hiphop style music and beats. Let me start by saying
that the MD is two different things in one: a drum-sound synthesizer and a
sequencer. The MD sequencer is incredible for hiphop, absolutely stunning, no more
need be said - except that it can sequence/write for external modules as well, so I
often use it to trigger samples or other synths. The drum-sound synth on the other is,
indeed, often more used for tech/house/lectro type applications, because it is very
easy to come up with fucked up electronic sounds. However, 2 of its four synths are
heavily based on the 808/909 and the Emu SP12, respectively, which were the two
drum machines that created hiphop (pre MPC). So my recommendation is absolutely
go for, with the caveat that the MD excels much more at 'snappy', synthy sounding
drums (think Neptunes, Grandmaster Flash, Dre) than, say, DJ Shadow-type
breakbeats. Which isn't to say that it necessarily sounds clean or polished or
commercial, it can be very dirty and raw. Last thing to say is that, the samples on the
web don't do it justice; nothing can until you start tweaking sounds and puitting
together your own patterns on it.

Hope that helps.

Puretokyo.

I agree. but I'd like to add that the MD can do DJ-shadow type drums
(basically, an old funk sound; so they're pretty lo-fi and gutsy).
messing with the built-in parametric EQ and compressor will take you
very far into that realm.

Joe.

Wow.

I'm going to try more things with the EQ and Compression from the Md
then :)

Any advice on to obtain that DJ Shadow sound (more like a general
advice, i don't wanna copy him outright ;)).

I obtained som SCORN-like snares and kick though....

Probably want to send your drums back through the filter inputs or
the like to get more trip-hop. Reverb? Delay? To your liking.

He uses an mpc by the way. Get on those sampler machines.

Don't forget to pan your drum sounds. Pan and delay is a good
combination. (Listen to Shadow with headphones.)

mmm..yeah...I did not use them at all until now...

I read in an interview that DJ Shadow used to layer his sounds with a
soft noise to give them more space and that lo-fi hiss.

I think it can be done easily with the MD..going to try that :)

I got my machinedrum, and I must say...PERFECT for what I was looking
to do. It compliments my current process so much that it feels like
a missing link has been found. I have already learned most of the
machine in one night and have pulled some fantastic sounds from it!
Now, I just need to save for a while to snag the monomachine!

great work Elektron!!!
