I wouldn't call myself a professional musician, but it's certainly the only thing I do with my free time. I am not signed to a label, and don't want to be... I'm waiting to see how the P2P / online stores (iTunes, bleep.com) / etc shake out before sending demos in, as I'm of the belief that there may be better choices than getting with a label for independents to release their music soon. I'm pretty terrified at the sort of 'benefits' peers of mine have had to deal with who've been signed to labels who care about them but don't have the manpower / resources / ability / mind to combat the piracy happening to electronic musicians right now (this community is hit hardest, as so many of the indy electronic labels and musicians are living inches from the line as it is, financially, and the audience is largely folk who also have the convenience of Kazaa / SoulSeek / etc at their fingertips, baiting their ethics with convenient downloads. Sort of a pickle of a situation... small electronic labels have issues with distribution, so fans have problems finding albums, so they turn online to download them as they need to, unfortunately then the labels don't get money, which leads to not having resources to increase distribution... it's a very difficult time. Sorry to soap box / go on on this. It's something I've been thinking about and talking to folks about a lot lately. As for the style of music, I love theory... I use my elektron gear for everything I do. The machinedrum and monomachine are often my inspiration points... I always start there or on my modular. It's so easy to take a basic idea and play with it in many variations where only the ears can be trusted (no computer screen) using the Elektron gear that I despise starting work in the DAW now... even if everything ends up there for the 'real' composition work. As for styles... well, I'd hate to be forced to put a label on myself. Maybe another reason why I fear labels. ;-] Cheers, Damon On Friday, February 13, 2004, at 01:31 PM, starpawz612 wrote: > this list is super active with users talking about features and bugs, > but i havn't seen a lot of people sharing their music . . . is it > mostly people on labels in here or what (with the price of the > products i imagine it's mostly serious producers)? i just make music > for fun and release it on the internet and cdr/tape labels all the > time. anyone else? > > also, what kinds of music are people making with the monomachine? is > it primarily IDM/techno/hiphop??? any classical/theory- > oriented/experimental composers? are you using you monomachines and > machinedrums as part of a full-fledged studio or as a stand-alone > workstation? > > ok i feel like that's enough questions and things, looking forward to > hearing from everyone! > > j.ordan >
