I have the same thing. I have various software all of which are free. You should also check out macmusic.org for all of your mac problems. This is all free that I'm listing. Get Soundsource so you can change your sound settings easily, this should be included in all mac OS imo. If you don't have a audio interface you can use LineIn to just plug your audio into the input and record. You can record with programs like Audacity, Audio In, or Audio Recorder. Basically you don't have to buy anything to record on a mac. The only thing you might need is a usb midi interface. Although the quality is not professional, it works fine.
